Love’s Angel, born in Heav’nly skies,
Owns naught but Virtue in her eyes
Till Nature, wanton, Lust implies
And Eden’s Innocence decries.

title  - vahine  - n. Polynesian term for a girl or maiden.  In the novel, set in the Equatorial Pacific, a vahine is a serving-girl at a party, typically someone younger and of lower station who wishes to improve her standing amongst her social superiors
